Noon wines, the story
Noon wines are a
McLaren Vale cult wine, and if you don’t think so, just ask the
people who are patiently waiting for their chance to join the
winery’s mailing list. Membership to the Noon mailing list is so
coveted that even just ‘making’ it onto the mailing lists ‘waiting
list’ is worth writing home about. The cellar door is only open
for a few weekends a year and for those who aren’t on the mailing
list, this is the only opportunity they’ll have to purchase Noon
wines at cellar door prices. And often, many wines are already
sold out at that time.
Drew Noon was a
trained oenologist before becoming a winemaker and is one of the
few masters of wine in Australia. The Noons are guided by one
goal: to produce the most uncompromising product possible. Using
Some biodynamic practice, Drew Noon first came into contact with
biodynamic when he worked at Cassegrain in NSW.
Drew and Raegan
Noon of Noon Winery in McLaren Vale, South Australia make 2,000 to
3,000 cases of wine
a year in one of the simplest wineries imaginable. Between a
rough floor and low rafters are two tiny basket presses, wooden
vats of all shapes and sizes, and some three-quarter ton
fermenters.
Owning just 10
acres of bush-vine Grenache planted in the 1930s and '40s going
into their signature “Eclipse”, the Noon’s depend for volume of
fruit from the Borrett family of Langhorne Creek for their other
wines. The “20 Rows” block providing the grapes for the shiraz,
and the “Fruit Trees” block for the Cabernet. Even after the
acclaim and success of the brand, Noon continues to price the
wines modestly given what could be charged, and most pricing in
the retail market reflects the formula of supply and demand.
"With their
incredible perfume and extraordinary purity and layers of fruit,
these are attention-getting wines, but there is a restraint,
balance, and complexity that is remarkable. Noon's wines taste
like the essence of their respective varietals, pushing
concentration and extract to the limit; although I have never
sensed that they were over-the-top. These are wines of
extraordinary depth and richness, with amazing upside potential in
the bottle. Life is too short not to be drinking the wines of
Drew and Rae Noon."
- Robert Parker on Noon Winery, in Robert M. Parker’s
“The World’s Greatest Wine Estates”.
